Kyoto's 🇯🇵 HIDDEN Gems You WON'T Find in Guidebooks! (avoiding crowds)

A Magical Morning at Fushimi Inari Taisha

Kyoto holds a special place in our hearts, and our recent visit was packed with so many incredible moments that it's hard to choose a favorite! We kicked off the day bright and early at Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of Japan’s most iconic shrines. Arriving before 7 AM, we were able to experience the stunning red Torii gates in near solitude, which made for an unforgettable and peaceful start to our Kyoto adventure. There’s something magical about wandering through the gates with only the sound of nature around you, and it gave us a serene and meditative feeling.

Tōji Temple: Stepping Back in Time

After soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, we visited Tōji Temple, home to Japan’s tallest wooden pagoda. Stepping into Tōji felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by traditional architecture and beautifully manicured gardens. The pagoda is a masterpiece in itself, and the history woven into the temple’s grounds is awe-inspiring.

Exploring Kyoto by Rickshaw

Next up was a delightful rickshaw ride through Kyoto’s historic streets. Our guide took us on a journey from Yasaka Shrine through the charming Gion district, all while sharing captivating stories about Kyoto’s rich history and traditions. It’s an experience we highly recommend—there’s no better way to see the city than being guided by a local expert who knows the ins and outs of every alley.

A Whimsical Visit to the Ghibli & Peter Rabbit Museum

A highlight of the day was our visit to the Ghibli & Peter Rabbit Museum. Being lifelong fans, it was a dream come true to explore this whimsical space. From there, we stumbled upon a charming antique shop where we found some unique treasures to take home. Kyoto’s second-hand shops are a hidden gem, filled with incredible items in excellent condition.

Wearing Traditional Kimonos in Kyoto

Of course, no trip to Kyoto would be complete without trying on traditional kimonos. We visited Kimono Kitamura, a lovely little shop, and had so much fun picking out our outfits. Walking around in traditional clothing really added to the authenticity of our experience, making us feel like we were part of the city’s history.

A Unique Experience at Yasui-Konpiragu Shrine

One of the most unique stops on our trip was Yasui-Konpiragu Shrine, known for its 'power stone' that’s believed to help break off bad ties and start fresh. We were fascinated by the rituals and the positive energy of the place—it was a spiritual and refreshing experience.

Indulging in Kyoto’s Culinary Delights

To top off our adventure, we indulged in a delicious meal of soba noodles and tempura, which was absolutely divine! The perfect ending to a perfect day was meeting a real-life geisha. We were fortunate enough to watch her perform and learn more about the geisha culture—a truly memorable experience that gave us deeper insight into Japan's traditions.

A Day to Remember

Kyoto is full of hidden gems and unforgettable experiences, and this day was one for the books. Whether you're planning a trip or dreaming of one, Kyoto has something magical for everyone. From its serene temples to its lively streets, the city captures the heart and soul of Japan. We can’t wait to share more from our Honeymoon Diaries with you!

With Love,

Adi & Nic
